Break of Structure: Signal or Noise?
A break of structure is a price move that takes out a prior swing high or low on a closing basis. Traders watch it because the level that was broken once held price back; when it gives way, the market has shown it can trade beyond that point.
What forms the pattern
Price first creates a swing by leaving a clear high or low, then pulls back and holds above or below that level. The structure is only in place once that pullback respects the extreme. A later candle that closes past the swing extreme removes the barrier and completes the break.
What confirms it
Confirmation rests on three conditions. The candle must finish beyond the level, not merely wick through it. The break itself is treated as a description of what has already occurred, not a signal that price will continue. Finally, the trader decides where the swing high or low actually sits; different observers can mark different points and therefore see different breaks.
How it fails
Calling every small dip a break of structure is the common error. If price never held above or below the level on a pullback, there was no structure to break in the first place. Without that prior acceptance, the move past the extreme carries no added meaning.
